Questions bands ask

Short answers to the things that come up when a band starts using Backline.

Getting started

How do I get the rest of the band in?

Open Members and hit Invite member. Add their email, a role and their instrument. They get a link that works for 7 days, log in or create an account, and they're in. Only owners and admins can invite.

What's the difference between owner, admin, member and guest?

Owners and admins run the band: songs, setlists, gigs, rehearsals, members and settings. Only an owner can delete the band. Members see everything, say whether they can make gigs and rehearsals, and upload demos. Guests are for stand-ins and crew. They can look at setlists, riders and stage plans, but they don't see fees and can't change anything.

Do I have to type all our songs in one by one?

No. On the Songs page, hit Import songs and paste your list, one song per line. Add a tuning, BPM or length after the artist if you have them. You check the list before anything is saved, and songs you already have are skipped.

I play in more than one band. Do I need another account?

No. One account can be in as many bands as you like, and you switch between them at the top of the sidebar. You can own up to 3 bands on Free. Pro bands and bands you've only joined don't count.

Setlists & songs

How do tunings work in a setlist?

Every song has a default tuning. In the setlist builder, click a song's tuning to change it for that set only. Wherever the tuning changes, the builder puts a retune line, so nobody starts the next song in the wrong tuning.

Why is the set longer than our songs add up to?

The set length adds 1 min for every tuning change. Retuning on stage takes longer than anyone admits. Songs with no length yet are flagged so you can fill them in.

Can we see what we've played?

The History panel on the dashboard shows how many gigs you've played and your most played songs. See all opens the full page with every song's play count, the songs you haven't played in six months, and gigs per year and per venue.

Gigs & availability

How does everyone say whether they can make a gig?

On My availability, each member answers yes, no or maybe. 7 days before a confirmed gig, anyone who hasn't said yes or no gets a reminder email. If someone says no to a gig in the next 14 days, owners and admins hear about it by email. Anyone can turn these emails off under Account settings → Notifications.

How do we find a date for rehearsal?

My availability also shows the next four weeks. Everyone ticks the evenings they're free, and you book the room where the column is green.

How do I send the venue our rider and stage plan?

Download each one as a PDF and attach them to your email. On Pro you can send one advance link instead. It's a page with the gig's setlist, rider and stage plan, always the latest version, and you can see when the venue last opened it.

Can I see our gigs in my phone's calendar?

On Pro, yes. Account settings → Calendar gives you a link to add to Google or Apple Calendar. Gigs and rehearsals show up there on their own.

Plans & billing

What do we get on Pro?

Free runs the whole band and doesn't run out. Pro costs 99 Kč a month or 990 Kč a year per band, and it's for bands that play out a lot. Compare plans

Who pays for Pro?

Pro is per band, so one subscription covers everyone in it. Any owner, admin or member can start or manage it on the Billing page. Guests can see the plan but can't pay.

What happens if we cancel Pro?

You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. After that nothing gets deleted. Extra stage plans, riders and demos stay, you just can't add more past the Free limits. The public page and advance links go offline, PDFs go back to Backline branding, and the API, webhooks and calendar feed stop.

Account & data

How do I delete our band or my account?

An owner can delete the band at the bottom of the band's Settings page. That also cancels its Pro subscription and removes its files. You can delete your own account in Account settings, but if you're the only owner of a band, delete the band or make someone else owner first.

Can I use two-factor login or a passkey?

Yes, both. Turn them on under Account settings → Security.

Is there an API?

Yes, a REST API for bands on Pro. Read the API docs
